The Three Earths: From Survival to Transformation

The Three Earths · Part One

The First Earth: Rediscovering the Roots of Community

There was a time—not perfect, not flawless—when community meant something deeper than proximity. People lived in relationship with one another and with the land around them. Life was not easy, but it was connected.

Community begins with and a sense of belonging with the land.
The Foundations

The Earth Was Built on Connection

Before community became something we talked about rebuilding, it was part of how people lived. Its foundations were found in everyday relationships, shared responsibilities, and a connection to place.

01 Belonging

Knowing your neighbors, your elders, and your stories.

02 Mutual Care

People helping people because it was the right thing to do.

03 Local Knowledge

Understanding the seasons, the land, the risks, and the opportunities.

04 Cultural Identity

Traditions that gave meaning, rhythm, and purpose to daily life.

05 Shared Responsibility

Everyone contributing to the well-being of the whole.

06 Clean Environments

Air you could breathe, water you could trust, and land you respected.

07 Connection to Place

Not just living somewhere, but belonging to it.

This was not utopia. It was simply human.

Relationships Before Systems

What Community Looked Like Before Extraction

Extraction is when systems take more than they give—from people, from land, and from culture. Before extraction became normal, community was built on reciprocity.

Everyday acts of care helped communities support one another.

People Exchanged More Than Goods

  • Time
  • Skills
  • Food
  • Stories
  • Protection
  • Wisdom

Not because they were paid to. Not because they had to. But because community was the original safety net.

In the First Earth, relationships were the infrastructure.

Our Local Story

The Inland Empire’s First Earth

The Inland Empire has always been a place of movement—Indigenous homelands, agricultural roots, railroad expansion, military influence, and suburban growth. Beneath those changes, there was also a foundation of community.

The places we live are shaped by the people, histories, and relationships within them.
  • Families who knew one another for generations.
  • Neighborhoods where kids played outside until the streetlights came on.
  • Local leaders who were accessible, visible, and accountable.
  • A sense of pride in place—even when resources were limited.

Again, not perfect. But connected.

The First Earth reminds us that community existed before systems tried to manage it.

Why It Matters Today

What Have We Lost—and What Can We Rebuild?

We are living in a time when:

  • Neighborhoods can feel disconnected.
  • People can feel isolated.
  • Everything can feel transactional—even help.
  • Systems can extract more than they invest.
  • Community can feel like something we have to rebuild from scratch.
We are not trying to invent community. We are trying to return to what humans were designed for.

The First Earth

This baseline helps us evaluate the systems we have created and the communities we want to build.

Questions Worth Asking

  • Do our systems support belonging?
  • Do they strengthen relationships?
  • Do they protect the environment?
  • Do they honor culture?
  • Do they give more than they take?

If not, they may be out of alignment with human well-being.
